What's our story........................

I am sure most of you are familiar with the vintage television show "Green Acres". Yes, that's the one, with Mr. Douglas, Mrs. Douglas, and of course, Arnold, the pig. As bad as I hate to compare Cedar Tree Ranch to Green Acres, I am afraid there are just a few similarities. You see, the song on the home page of this website describes a man much like Mr. Douglas, that would be me. I came to this ranch with a vision of owning a few Longhorns. It was going to be sort of a hobby for me. I found out pretty quick...........this isn't a hobby. This is a business.

Therefore, after learning a few lessons the hard way, as the song would say "green horn", I am now a seasoned rancher. I have gone from a city slicker like Mr. Douglas to a full blown cattle baron named Ray Stavig. Really, I am just a second generation Norwegian descent that was raised on a farm in Minnesota, but that is a whole other story.

Now, as for Mrs. Douglas. I'm sorry, I mean Mrs.Stavig, my wife, which I affectionately refer to as Little Donnah Jean. Her friends and family call her "DJ". She hasn't really warmed up to the animals as much as I have. However, she loves going to the sale barn and putting on all of the Longhorn jewelry and get-up she can to look like she is involved. Of course, she delights in coming up with a clever name for one of the newborn calfs. I would pretty much say that was her extent of involvement with the ranch.

The ranch is host to over 20 head of cattle, chickens, guinea fowl, turkeys, a few coyotes and a snake every now & then. There are 29 acres in which to roam. My wife confines her roaming to the front part of the house, where there are all the modern conveniences provided.

That pretty much sums it up. It may not be much, but it is home and I love it.

Wait a minute, that is not totally true. It is my wife who first had the ranch. Having said that, it wasn't in much shape to even be considered a ranch when we met. My wife has lived on this ranch for 41 years. She has survived the flood of 1979, 3 lightning strikes, and too many tornadoes to mention. As a matter of fact, she tells me the true history of the ranch, long before she or I resided here, has quite a story.

The ranch is located on a private road that is now referred to as Chariot Drive. Back in the day, this dusty little lane didn't even have a name. It was merely a way to get to the A-frame house at the end of it. Prior to the home being built, rumor has it that it was the location of an old trading post. I have also heard rumors that an Indian cemetery is located on the property. Arrow heads, crystals, and many other facinating treasures have been found through the years. To date, no gold or silver has been found, but I'm still digging. I told my wife they were gopher holes!

The original home, said to be in excess of 100 years old, consisted of a bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. There was a detached garage, that has since been joined to the rest of the house. Today, the house has 5 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 baths, a fireplace, and a wrap around deck. This old house has been the gathering spot for many wonderful holidays spent with family and friends.

DJ with some of the herd.
